Barnsley Zion Elim Pentecostal Church

History

The Foursquare Gospel Alliance

In November 1931 Principal George Jeffreys and his team - Pastor Darragh and Pastor Edsor came to Barnsley and held special meetings in the PUBLIC HALL, Eldon Street. After the campaign the meetings were held in the Arcade in the room over the Shoe Shop and Butchers called the Arcade Hall. The first minister was Pastor H. Fielding - the singing evangelist. The first pianist was Miss L. Askey. The services were held on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Pastor Fielding stayed until May, 1932 when Pastor McAvoy came and stayed until 1934.

A Young People's Meeting called the Crusaders was started and Mrs. Lawrence was the first leader. It was held in the Welsh Chapel on Eldon Street. Open air meetings were held on Saturday nights in the Market Place.

Baptismal services were held in the Zion Baptist Church - Pitt St. West. One Baptismal Service was held in the Open Air Baths at Cawthorne in 1933 when Pastor McAvoy officiated. During the summer months weekly rambles were held to Cawthorne, Woolley Dam, Rockley Dam and Locke Park. One part of the park was known at AMEN corner.

Pastor Knight and his wife succeeded Pastor McAvoy and the first MANSE was obtained in Park Grove.

On the 15th February, 1939 during the pastorate of Pastor Hillman in Nelson Street the present Church was opened. It was a cold Saturday night and people began to queue long before the time for the opening.

The Church that night was so full that it recorded over 400 people present. The seats in the building were red plush tip up seats most of which had been bought by members at 5/ - per seat.

Special meetings that weekend were conducted by Pastor Brewster then continued by Pastor Woodhead.

Since these early days the Elim Church has seen many changes. Pastors have come and gone. The building has been modernised. There have been many Sunday School Superintendents, Crusader Leaders, Young Peoples Leaders, Church Officials BUT - the fundamental truths are still the same.

In 2002 the fellowship purchased the Methodist church in Cutty Lane. This is now a centre of Pentecostal witness in Barnsley with seating for approximately 120 people. The building has recently been modernised to include facilities for the disabled.

We also operate a children's work on the Kendray estate in the 'Kendray Free Church Hall' in Ash Grove.

Jesus Christ is still - The Saviour The Healer The Baptiser The Coming King.
